Khurasan Miniatures is sneaky

More and more I find myself wondering "what is Khurasan Miniatures up to." It's something I used to wonder about GZG or other manufacturers. This year though it's Khurasan. Almost everything they produce seems to fill a need or just be cool enough that I want to find a need for it.

This Spring their owner and sole proprietor found himself overwhelmed by the sheer number of inventory codes and incoming orders. A victim of his own success he cut down on the number of codes and placed the store in "Summer Store" status. This is the status it sits in  today as the leaves change color here in Pennsylvania.

Oh sure they have a blog.where I could keep track of upcoming projects. But he doesn't post as often as you'd think. The last post was over a month ago. And I don't read the news over at TMP as often as I did when I was working and someone essentially paid me to read TMP. But I do read a few 15mm SciFi blogs, and I think they've all missed something...

Despite the fact that the store has not come out of Summer status they've quietly been adding codes. While the Post-Apocalyptic stuff I want to order more of isn't back yet, it's all very interesting.

The first thing that caught my eye recently was this.

Yes, that's right it's a pack of SEAL operators. I have to have them, they are seriously cool. And not in a "they killed Bin Laden" cool way. I don't really roll that way with my gaming as I've discussed before. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

You see as someone who was schooled on the old Classic Traveller RPG where characters from the Far Future strode around with a Flak Jacket and a SMG, these guys are high tech. You can paint them anyway you like and add a few high tech touches like small flying drones, robots on treads (see GZG), powered armor support teams and a cool command element. You could build a whole reinforced platoon this way and use it in a near future "Ghost in the Shell" setting.

These are elite operators, think of them as the Mercedes S class of the military world. Every big advancement in automotive technology was in the S class first. So the way the Seals are armed and kitted out is the way the regular soldier will look in 10 years. Or 400 years in the Far Future in my Traveller Universe.

Then a few more days go by and I spot this in the new "Modern Combat" section of the online store.

They're called "Initiate Containment Protocol" and are obviously aimed towards the 15mm Zombie gamer, but they'll do nicely in my Fallout 3 world. They appear to have been painted by the guy over at Tiny Solitary Soldiers, who's probably been sworn to secrecy. Okay, so now Khurasan has got my full attention but I wasn't really expecting this a few days later.

They've long had some Neo-Soviet (Nova Respublik) vehicles on the site, but here is the new infantry to go with them. I love the look.

Support Troops, mortar, heavy machine gun and sniper with smock.

And a command element. I just love this golden age of 15mm Science Fiction. Science Fiction gamers have been whining for years "where's the specialists and command figures we need to build a unit?" Khurasan is smart enough to not wait for the whining and release the packs all at the same time.

I saw these drawings on John Bear Ross's blog a while back, but it's in production now, the "Darling Little." Talk about a support weapon.

I don't have an immediate use for the Respublik figures, but I'm sure I'll come up with something. So here I sit in Fall looking at a "Summer Store" that appears to be gearing up to getting back into full production one new pack at a time. Well I'm sitting on the edge of my seat. I know as soon as I place an order they'll have something else pop up that I want to buy. But I'm okay with that.

  1. Yeah Khurasan has become my first 15mm scifi store of choice, I have the containment protocol painted (can be seen on my blog), the SEALs winging their way to me (I have ordered 3 teams, 1 will be painted as SEALs, the other 2 as scifi and will be used in conjunction with the exterminators), and I will be buying the Nove Rep troops, Jon' doing a great job.

  2. Khurasan is driving me bonkers, he previewed "Robot Monster" style aliens on his blog ages ago, and I've been saying "I'll wait until those are released before I order again". And... where are they? *sob*

Nice blog by the way... and I love the title since I just had a little one and in a few years I'm hoping she'll like my collection enough to look... but not touch ;)

  3. Khurasan had me delaying my initial order for a year because there was always something on the horizon. Something in the blog, something with a title but no picture (except a cat in a boater hat), something "being cast".

At some point I just had to place an order knowing something cool would be out a month later. It's just the way it is. Currently I've got 4 must haves on my list from them. I'd like to have a fifth before I place my order.
